A first contact last spring at the North American unveiling of the new generation of the Mazda CX-5 had particularly impressed us – just like the first generation of this compact Japanese SUV, by the way. Recently, we have tested 2 versions of the 2017 CX-5 to validate our initial love affair.
Here are the aspects that have amazed us the most:
1 – Superb design
Its modern design, inherited from Mazda’s KODO philosophy, is very successful, as are other Mazda models from this school (new CX-9, Mazda MX-5 2016): a beautiful grille, thin headlights extending alongside the car, a distinctive tailgate with a small flap and especially multiple design refinements. In fact, its line both classic and sporty is a success.
2 – Finishing quality
The finish quality of the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is impressive on several points: body assembly, quality of materials used including a suede finish for the GS and perforated leather for the GT, superior soundproofing, etc. In this regard, Mazda really stands out from its Japanese competition and even rises close to some compact luxury SUVs.
3 – Interior fittings
Although the CX-5 is not the most spacious in its class, it will comfortably accommodate 4 to 5 passengers. In terms of the trunk, its size is suitable and we can only praise the back of its reclining and divisible back seat 40/20/40.
4 – Comfort
Comfortable seats, quality materials, excellent Bose sound system with 10 speakers, heated rear seats, connectivity system with dashboard screen … the new CX-5 offers a lot of equipment for comfort on the road.
5 – SKYACTIV Technology
SKYACTIV technology has become a true trademark for Mazda in a few short years. On the mechanical side, its 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine offers adequate power at all levels, smooth ride and above all low fuel consumption with an average of 8.5 L / 100 km urban and highway situation. The 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode performs a good job, as does its all-wheel-drive i-ACTIV.
6 – Behavior
The steering is better dosed, as its braking, and its maneuverability is excellent especially in an urban situation. In fact, the CX-5 is fun to drive especially in GT version with its 19-inch wheels and 225 / 55R19 tires, as well as the effectiveness of the G-force vector control.
7 – Philosophy “Jinba Ittai”
It may seem like a marketing strategy for many consumers or communication for the automotive press, but Mazda’s “Jinba Ittai” concept is really effective. Basically, the driver and the vehicle are one. It is, therefore, a perfect interaction between the engine and its transmission, the platform, the dynamics of the vehicle as well as its technology.
8 – Security
With its i-ACTIVSENSE technology, Mazda offers a set of devices for safer driving. In addition, it is important to mention the design of the CX-5’s structure, which optimizes its safety in the event of an accident.
9 – Choice of models
Available in GX base with the 2.0-liter engine, standard 6-speed transmission, and manual transmission, the CX-5 is also available in GX and GS versions with a 2.5-liter engine, AWD and automatic transmission to 6 reports. In addition, we can get the GT livery with the optional Technology Package, which offers numerous driving assistants. The CX-5 offers a wide choice of models with excellent value for money. Note that the basic version is available starting at $ 24,900, while the GT with Technology Group as a high-end model starts at $ 36,300.
10 – Brand shop
With a philosophy of becoming a brand with which customers will establish a deep emotional connection, Mazda can now be considered in the automotive industry as a true boutique brand. Because to achieve this philosophy, the Japanese manufacturer has paid a very special attention to design and quality of finish (with materials and truly remarkable details), without neglecting the aspect of product engineering which is one of its strengths.
